A man was fondly holding a baby. Suddenly, the baby struck his face with a toy, and a nail in it injured him. He felt intense pain. After a few days, the wound was healed without leaving a scar. Some days later, an enemy hit that man in front of several others and his nail caused an injury. The man who was hit and humiliated felt intense pain. The pain was more intense at the consciousness-level. A few days later the bodily wounds were healed and the pain vanished. But the pain felt at the consciousness-level lingered for many years.
A man exists in two states viz. inner man and external man. Someone severed my legs. But I exist. He cut off my hands too. Still I exist. Though my body undergoes a change in shape with the absence of a few of its organs, the inner man called "I" does not vary. Though a major part of my body disappears this way, I shall still exist. A bird resides in its nest. If the nest is dismantled, it will stay outside it's nest. Same way, even if the outer man which is just the shell of the inner man perishes, the inner man will exist for ever. Human soul never perishes. A man suffers hunger. Therefore it is certain that there exists some food that is capable of satiating the hunger. Instead of eating at the time of hunger, by listening to some music or indulging in other activities, one can forget hunger for a little while. But one cannot eliminate hunger this way.
Similarly, as one feels thirsty, there exists water which is capable of quenching the thirst. There is no substitute for water in quenching the thirst. Just as the outer man suffers hunger and thirst, the inner man also suffers hunger and thirst. Even after a man eats and drinks to his contentment, he looks for ways to pass his leisure and indulges in several acts. He sees movies, reads novels, smokes, drinks, indulges in fornication and other immoral acts, plays not only for fitness but also for recreation, gambles, gives rein to wild imaginations and gives room for haughty and sinful thoughts. Though he tries to satisfy the hunger and thirst of the inner man through such carnal pleasures he is not satisfied because such things are not appropriate food. That is why a person loses the momentary pleasure he experiences while indulging in carnal pleasures and again feels void. Unsatisfied, he again looks for something else for satisfaction.
A man who had eaten to his fill can not eat anything more, but will reject even honey. Since the inner man suffers from hunger and thirst, is it not certain that there should be an appropriate object which is capable of satisfying such cravings? What is that object? God calls, "Wherefore do ye spend money for that which is not bread? and your labour for that which satisfieth not? hearken diligently unto me, and eat ye that which is good, and let your soul (inner man) delight itself in fatness. come ye, buy and eat without money and without price." (Isai. 55:1-2)(KJV).
Jesus said "I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst" (John 6:35)(KJV). You who are hungry! Eat (obey) the bread of life (His words)! Satisfy the hunger of the inner man (your inner self). You who are thirsty! Come to the spring of living water. Receive the living water (Holy Spirit) that is capable of quenching your thirst. Quench the thirst of the inner man - You alone are the victorious in life! Come to Jesus! Come and see!
For a man's life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth" (Luke 12:15)(KJV).
