Many speak of wisdom in different ways in the world. Some call only the things created by their hands as wisdom and some call their own adamant attitude as wisdom. Some declare their own discoveries as wisdom. But only quarrel, pain, loss, horror, fear and lack of peace are the result of all these. It is not possible to obtain any noble benefit out of these. May God help us to analyze about the pagan wisdom(false wisdom), the worldly wisdom (science) and the true wisdom.
Pagan Wisdom (False Wisdom):
When a man possesses pagan wisdom, he will not believe any thing and wont accept even if something is proved clearly. He will stick to his own view adamantly. There are many such people in this world. Even if one tells them of the things on which they have no knowledge, they fail to realize it and ignore them. Such people are unwilling to know the True Matter. Of them, the word of God says, "Go to this people and say: "Hearing you will not hear and shall not understand; And seeing you will not see, and not perceive; For the heart of this people has grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes they have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their heart and turn, so that I should heal them""(Acts 28:26-27). Such people can not see with their eyes and hear with their ears, lest they understand with their hearts and be healed. Many people place hand-made objects on the chariot and pull it along the streets announcing that is the wisdom and they have come to unite the people though it is not possible to perceive any kind of unity among them. This being the case how can people be united by such object of wisdom as claimed by them?
Some believe that if they die in a specific period or in a particular place they will reach heaven. But an adage speaks of such people thus "The gates of heaven is distant to those having pagan wisdom". This adage says that they will not find the gates of heaven. God says to such people, "the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone which is the second death" (Rev. 21:8). "There shall by no means enter it anything that defiles or causes and abomination or a lie"(Rev. 21:27). A sinner and one not willing to leave his sinful works and the one who is not forgiven of his sins by virtue of his birth and the sins by virtue of his works will not enter heaven. God declares through scriptures that such a person will inherit hell.
Some superstitious people in India arrange marriage between a male donkey and a female donkey, believing that such an event will cause rainfall even in areas where there had been no rain. If it were so, can we not bring about green revolution in all the dry lands? Is rainfall under the control of the marriage between the donkeys? They don't realize that God "call for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the face of the earth" (Amos 9:6). And some people arrange marriage between two trees with the belief that this will lengthen their lives and prevent their wives from becoming widows. If such people were to meet with death, will those trees come to their rescue and lengthen their days? God answers them, "Honor your father and mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you"(Ex. 20:12).
The Lord's words say that one's life is lengthened only when he honors his mother, father, God and the church formed by God. We have seen the pagan wisdom and the words of God which nullifies it. Let us now proceed to see the worldly wisdom which is science.
The Worldly Wisdom (Science):
If something good results from analyzing the creation of God, man tries to make use of it. After watching the birds flying he invented the airplane. He analyzed the echo and made radio. Man created electricity out of the force of waterfalls. But sometimes loss and death result from all these. When he is stricken with desease, he conducts experiments in the field of medicine and discovers a remedy. But there are many diseases not curable by him. In the field of agriculture, he discovers many hybrid seeds and attempts to increase the yield. But pests come up against him to destroy the plants. He makes pesticides to destroy those pests. Nevertheless there are many pests which he can not destroy. He sends rockets to observe the planets and to inhabit them. However they become nonfunctional and even turn against him which disturbs his quest. Nevertheless he has an unending desire for fresh discoveries and inventions. He is not able to satisfy his mind. The Scriptures too say the same: "All the labor of man is for his mouth, yet the soul is not satisfied" (Ecclesiastes. 6:7). His efforts through science can not satisfy him nor set his mind to rest. Why should it be this way? The Scriptures says "For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God" (I Cor. 3:19). As the pagans and scientists act according to their own will and not depend on God nor in association with Him, the pagan wisdom and the wisdom of the scientists can not bring about satisfaction. Let us now see the true wisdom.
The True Wisdom (Divine Wisdom):
"And all drank the same spiritual drink. For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ" (I Cor. 10:4). The Holy Scriptures says that the pinnacle of true wisdom is Christ. A wisdom comparable to His has never been found in anybody else or in any religion. When one receives Jesus Christ who is truly wise God, he too is changed into a truly wise man. When one lives wholeheartedly in obedience to the commandments, ordinances and doctrines of Christ, when he receives Christ who is the true wise God, he first gets peace.
Jesus Christ says, "Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you" (John 14:27). This word is a true word and it has life in it. This word truly works in the lives of those who have accepted Him. The worldly peace is like a bubble and prone for sorrow. The peace of Christ is divine peace and it is an abiding divine peace. When one receives Christ who is the true wisdom, he is privileged to be conformed to His image. The Holy Scriptures declare: "but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is" (I John 3:2). Only those highly evolved in godliness can attain this state and not those who pretend to be godly. Some people, in order to show their godliness wear some particular clothes and ornaments during some period, leave some of their sins, refrain from uttering certain words and keep pronouncing certain names during that time. When those days are completed, they again indulge in their sinful activities. This state appears to be like a drama.
According to the Hindu religious book Bhagvat Gita, godliness is a state wherein the soul of man is in union with the Supreme God. As a man loves the true God more and more, the true God leaves paradise to live in him. This state, this life of union with God can last his lifetime. From the beginning, this joint life will lead directly to great joy and great peace. Like the stem joined with the flower giving out the sweet smell, the soul of man in union with the Supreme God reveals the characteristics of the Supreme God. As the Supreme God has no relationship with the worldly habits and sinful life, the soul of man also hates worldly habits and sinful life and begins to live a life pleasing to God. This life is not limited to any specific period but can last the lifetime of man. Bhagvat Gita teaches that this alone is the definition to godliness.
But this experience is fulfilled only in Christian life. Jesus said, "I am with you always, even to the end of the age" (Mat. 28:20). Godliness is the union of God of heaven with man. When a man is accomplished in godliness, he is changed into His likeness. This privilege, this noble blessing results only when one receives Jesus Christ. When one receives Christ who is the true wisdom, he receives the grace to enter heaven. Jesus Christ says, "And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also" (John 14:3).
Though there are many religions and many gods in this world, there is no relationship between heaven and those religions and also there is no relationship between heaven and those gods. Jesus Christ says that He is in possession of the keys of the kingdom of heaven. He says to his chief disciple, "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven" (Mat. 16:19). The authority and keys of the kingdom of heaven belong to Jesus Christ alone. As many rivers confluence in the sea, some think that one can enter heaven through any religion. But even the sewerage ends up in the sea. This being so, how can those with sewerage-like qualities enter into heaven? Therefore the opinion of such people is totally wrong. Christ alone is the way and the guidepost for any entry into the heaven. Jesus Christ who is the true wisdom declares, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6). Therefore pagans and scientists! leave from your own wisdom and believe in Jesus Christ who is the True Wisdom. "To the King eternal, immortal, invisible, to God who alone is wise, be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen" (I Tim. 1:24).
