Many speakers preach about peace without knowing the peace bestowed by
Jesus Christ. They preach: "Are you afflicted with disease? Call unto
Jesus. He will cure you of your illness and grant you peace. Is your son
unemployed? Come to Jesus and he will receive employment and you will be
comforted. Is your daughter's marriage delayed? Fall at the feet of
Jesus and the marriage will materialize". As mentioned in I John 4:5,
"They are of the world. Therefore they speak as of the world, and the
world hears them", the people go after such speakers in large numbers.
Many half-baked persons claim, "I have accepted Jesus Christ believing
in Himself. I have received peace. My confusions are cleared. Disease
has vanished. My poverty is gone. I am full of happiness. Look at all
the great things God has done in my life. Would God do so many things in
our life if He did not love us. We lead a peaceful life". Thus, a large
part of Christians are content with worldly blessings and deceive
themselves believing that they got this peace as they worshipped
Jesus.
Look at the worldly people. "They have no struggles; their bodies are
healthy and strong. They are free from the burden common to man; they
are not plagued by human ills. Therefore pride is their necklace; they
clothe themselves with violence. They have more than heart could wish.
There are the ungodly who are always at ease; They increase in riches"
(Psalms. 73:3-12). Though they get these, do they get peace? Does it mean
that just because Christians too had received such benefits as the
worldly people, they have peace? Let us see the peace bestowed by
Jesus Christ in the light of the Holy Scriptures. God kept Adam and Eve
at Aden and had given them all they needed in abundance. Besides He had
walked among them and was their God. There was good relationship between
man and God. They were at peace. Satan intervened and gave an ill-advice
to transgress the commandment of God. The commandment of God was
transgressed by man and from then onwards, sin had separated man from
God. Man lost the peace. As sin increased, he distanced himself more and
more from God. Man's sorrow and sighing increased. We were without God
(Eph. 2:12) because of which our peace was destroyed. Like a little boy
going to the church with his father on the day of festival, engrossed in
sightseeing, leaving his father's hand and getting lost in the crowd and
finally desolate and restless frantically looking for his father,
mankind was deceived by satan, caught up in the vanity of this world,
distanced from the heavenly Father, not knowing the way to find Him
again, burdened and restless, meditating in caves and forests, they
yearned to somehow find God and reach heaven. All these efforts did not
give them peace. Lord Jesus Christ came to show the way to the Father to
us who had been like sheep which lost their way. He came and said: Come
to Me all who are weary and burdened (burdened by their inability to see
the Father), and I will give you rest (peace). I know the Father. I
reveal the Father to whom I choose. The path to reach the Father is
hidden from the wise and the learned (Matt. 11:25,27-28). All things for
showing the way to the Father have been committed to Me alone. Therefore
you come and learn the path and do likewise. Then you shall attain the
knowledge of God and through Me have fellowship with Him and find rest
(peace), said God Jesus (Matt. 11:27,29).
As Jesus came to this world there was glory to God in the highest, man
received peace as the gap between him and God was closed and there was
goodwill of God towards man who had till then been His enemy (Luke 2:14).
Jesus started fellowship with God. When there were yet many
things to be taught to them and as His time approached for being taken
up, Jesus told them: I have much more to say to you, more than you can
now bear. But when He, the Spirit of truth come, He will guide you into
all truth (John 16:12-14). The Holy Spirit will teach you all things and
will remind you of everything I have said to you. Do accordingly. Peace
I leave with you (John 14:26-27).
Following this, the disciples received peace. So long as a child of God
abides in His teaching, he would possess peace. As he is united with
Jesus, he could live with God. He would hear God's voice and do His
will. He may be famished, he may be starving, he may be without clothes
or he may be stricken by disease; whatever be the circumstances, even if
floods surround him, he will be at peace, that is , he will still have
God. This is the peace bestowed by Lord Jesus.
"You have filled my heart with greater joy than when their grain and
new wine abound" (Psalms. 4:7).
