COME AND WORSHIP JESUS CHRIST

VOWS

"I will pay You my vows, which my lips have uttered, and my mouth has spoken, when I was in trouble" (Ps.66: 13,14). The reason for the fall of many in spiritual life is not fulfilling their vows. It is good for man to pray to God making vows. We can solve difficult problems by prayer with vows. God has told: "Offer to God thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High. Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me" (Ps.50: 14,15).

There are different types of vows. Jephthah made a vow to the Lord that if God granted him victory over his enemies, he would offer as burnt offering whatever that comes first out of his house to meet him (Jud.11: 30,31). Anna made a vow that if God gave her a son, she would give him to the Lord for doing His ministry (I Sam.1: 11). A few had taken a vow of a Nazirite and some had made vows not to touch wine or special foods. Likewise different people may make different types of vows.

When Christians receive baptism, they make a promise of vow that they shall leave sin and seek holiness. Some others offer themselves to God for doing His ministry. Some people make vows of money or property. Whatever be the nature of vow made in the above manner, it should be fulfilled. Not making a vow is not as sin. However those who make vows should fulfill them at any cost.

"If you make a vow to the Lord your God, do not be slow to pay it, for the Lord your God will certainly demand it of you and you will be guilty of sin. But if you refrain from making a vow, you will not be guilty of sin. Whatever your lips utter you must be sure to fulfill that, because you made your vow freely to the Lord your God with your own mouth" (Deut.23:21-23)(NIV).

Jacob made a vow (Gen.28: 20-22). God reminded Jacob of his vow (Gen.31: 13; 35:1). Jacob fulfilled that vow. You too should fulfill your vow. "I am under vows to You, O God" (Ps.56: 12). Some people make foolish vows and struggle later unable to fulfill the vow. It is better to obtain counsel from saints above us to avoid such mistakes. Making vow is a matter of honor to the Lord. Don't delay but fulfill it at once. Don't make substitutes (Mal.1: 13,14). After making vow, don't say that you have done it by mistake. Fulfill without delay any vow, which you have made for your good or profit.

"When you make vow to God, do not delay to pay it; for He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed. It is better not to vow than to vow and not pay. Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands?" (Eccl. 5-6)(NKJV). When Samson violated his vow of Nazirite, his strength departed from him. The Lord had left him (Jud.16:19,20). Have you fulfilled your vow? "Make vows to the Lord your God and fulfill them. Let all the neighboring lands bring gifts to the One to be feared " (Ps.76:11). "My praise shall be of You in the great congregation; I will pay My vows before those who fear Him" (Ps.22:25)(NKJV).

"I will give You thanks in the great assembly; among throngs of people I will praise You" (Ps. 35:18)(NIV).
